Taking a few steps towards getting @bahai more functional. There's an issue with the previous script that fed it new stuff due to it being written in python 2. The new script I'm developing for it is in python 3, uses an actual database of sorts, and will enable me to hit many birds with one stone, as it were. Watch for good things, I guess. #bots
bot dev hassles
everything is set up properly in the .env file, so what've I forgotten 🤔
IMO the best thing would be just to return the answer with no link, that way you'd have no idea what site it came from and you'd just sit there scratching your head wondering whether to call shenanigans or not

Dog Food is a gift. It is also used during the mission to unlock Scraps.
idea for a #bot: mention it with a search term and it will return the top result from one of 300 different websites, some of which are legit search engines, some of which are niche fandom wikis. the catch being that you don't know in advance which site will return your result
This might be a long shot, but is there any way to get #Twitter notifications to propagate over to the #Fediverse? I'm definitely not as active on the birdsite anymore, but I haven't yet cut it out of my life completely (because reasons) and would just like to have ways to limit the amount of time I go back there to check.
And yeah, I know a good way to help that happen is to facilitate the migration of yonder birds. But hey, throw me a bone.
How can I improve the https://fediverse.info people directory?
I have a few ideas:
- Allow registration via statuses that contain hashtag topics so you don't need to pollute your bio
- User avatars (held off on this as it would require moderation)
- Topic intersection (group results by multiple topics)
- Filter by instance/domain
- Use localStorage to keep track of profiles you seen to show fresher results
I was just talking about streaming a coding session but now my bots are nowhere to be found, they are dead
THE BOTS ARE DEAD
Am I right to think that a lot of the goings-on surrounding #socialmedia these days is about moderation? People either saying there's too little, or there's too much.
Turning to the bigger picture for a moment, #moderation is a #spiritual quality: the ability to moderate one's utterance to avoid extremes of expression. Stopping yourself from snapping at someone, or saying something that might break the #trust of a friend. Choosing words of #love and #peace rather than words of hatred or war.
I think I may start to stream some coding sessions as I work on the #bots.
Thanks to the growing interest in @xyzzy, I feel like it might be nice to spend a little more time fine tuning the project, and since the bot already has an audience there may just be some people out there who'd like to see and/or participate in the thought processes behind it.
