@Elizafox that's a UI problem more than anything, the landing page for mastodon.social doesn't really make it clear that it's one instance in a large network / where to find other instances (the "Other instances" link is like 8pt font and still leads to the totally unmanageable github page)
If your are noticing your federated timeline is being covered in junk, you can always silence some domains in the panel.
It doesn't stop people from following people on those instances.
It just prevents their stuff from being shown in the timeline.
I'm sure for my massive amounts of tooting people have silenced mst3k.interlinked.me.
When you suddenly remember that human bodies actually look really weird and we're just conditioned/programmed to like them and you can't stop thinking about it.
For every thing you like there will be people who think it sucks, but try not to let it get you down. Their thoughts don't change the reality, or how much you like whatever it is you like.
