A fun little success with multi-cultural/lingual moderation:

I was reviewing a trending hashtag: "长毛象安利大会". My instance lists trending hashtags only after mod review.

Google Translate said "Mammoth Amway Conference." Clearly "mammoth" is "Mastodon," but is this actually Amway? I wouldn't allow MLM to trend.

The posts didn't look like literal Amway. I have ~zero Chinese cultural/language competence. Time to ask friends.

@pstewart guessed it might be shorthand for "pitch something to us..."

“卖安利”means strongly recommending sth in mandarin. And “大会” means a big meeting or a event

Because a main sns platform in china called Weibo recently starts to show its users’ ip in public without permission and users can’t cancel that. Then a lot of users decided to leave Weibo, and we seize the chance to “卖安利” recommend mastodon to them XD

@AloneTogether @jrenken I am so glad that someone decided to chime in who is a fluent reader/speaker of Chinese.
